The development of the DIY industry owes much to individual promotional activities.
Japan DIY Industry Association was established on July 18,1977, as a voluntary organization dedicated to promoting the DIY spirit and developing the related industries .On May 19,1980 we were granted permission by the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry(now Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) to become incorporated as "Japan DIY Industry Association". As a non-profit foundation, we have been conducting a variety of activities to promote a comprehensive development of the DIY industry and to contribute to enhance the living standard of the Japanese people through wholesome promotion of DIY. Designed by 10 general committees and 1 special committee (total 11 committees), our projects are aggressively conducted in cooperation with our corporate members nationwide to achieve regional promotion of DIY. Our policy of promoting DIY through united efforts by the manufacturing, wholesale and retail sectors of the DIY industry has been acclaimed by many people and the number of corporate members has grown considerably, from 260 companies in 1977 to 515 companies (as of January, 2010). We have 75 retail member companies which have more than 3,300 homecenter stores in total all over Japan. We at Japan DIY Industry Association will continue to expand our member network to promote DIY.
For the spirit of DIY to penetrate into consumer life, it is crucial to train specialists who can teach amateurs know-how of DIY so that DIY may be promoted in a desirable manner and the DIY industry may achieve a wholesome development. In an effort to train such staff so that DIY may be enjoyed by as many people as possible, we have been conducting annual DIY adviser certificate tests since 1983. After 27 years there are now 12,400 advisers who are engaged in promoting DIY according to its spirit.

The "JAPAN DIY HOMECENTER SHOW" is the largest event in Japan where products and information concerning homecenters are all brought together and negotiations and information exchange are conducted. In Tokyo, the event was held 30 times in total, from the first event in 1978, through 2009. In Osaka, the event was held 15 times in total, from 1987 through 2002. And we have decided to have the JAPAN DIY HOMECENTER SHOW once a year in Tokyo only to concentrate power of the industry.
